The Society

The Russian Scientific Society of Endovascular Therapies was founded in 2002. Bagrat G. Alekyan, a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, was chosen to be the chairperson of the society. The society was created for the purpose of uniting the efforts of specialists involved in endovascular therapies and the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease. The society has a membership of more than 1000 physicians from regions of the Russian Federation and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Under the aegis of the society, there are more than 150 clinics involved in working on issues related to managing endovascular therapies for diseases of the heart and vessels. The society's members include cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons, pediatricians, neonatologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, radiologists, and other specialists. Under the auspices of the society, 7-8 breakout sessions on endovascular diagnostics and cardiovascular disease treatment are organized at the annual All-Russian Conference of Cardiovascular Surgeons and the annual session held by the Bakulev Scientific Center of Cardiovascular Surgery, Russian Academy of Medical Sciences.

In Moscow, the society conducts Moscow's International Course on Endovascular Therapies of Congenital and Acquired Heart Defects, Ischemic Heart Disease, and Vascular Pathology. This takes place yearly and gathers together the leading specialists from Western Europe, the USA, Asia, Russia and the CIS.

On a yearly basis, the society performs an analysis of the status of endovascular therapies within the Russian Federation. This analysis is reflected in the annually published brochure, “Endovascular Diagnostics and Cardiovascular Treatment in the Russian Federation”.

The objectives of the society are aimed at facilitating the introduction of new endovascular treatments for cardiovascular disease, the instruction and training to specialists in this field, and the growth and invigoration of international cooperation.

As a result of the active work of the society, a discrete medical specialty has been created and given the name Endovascular Therapies.
